Community Involvement

Our team loves getting together to give back to the community. Part of our Vision for 2020 is to engage and inspire others to join us in our #NMIMPACT community outreach program.

We dream of a day when children and their families won't have to face the fear and uncertainty of a cancer diagnosis. That's why we're raising money for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, in honor of Michael Heras. Michael was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in May 2016, at 16 years old.  He underwent aggressive treatment until all options were exhausted, and earned his wings on May 25, 2018. Your support goes directly to find a cure for osteosarcoma, in his honor.

Each year we hold several fundraisers to engage our community in helping find a cure. You can join us in the fight against childhood cancer, by participating in the 4th annual Dream Run 5K. Register on our Eventbrite page at  You can run, walk, or stroll at our stroller-friendly, family-friendly, pet-friendly course. You can also be a virtual runner and honor Michael, by making a donation directly on Alex’s Lemonade Stand foundation's website at

CAMP stands for Children's Association for Maximum Potential. Our team had the opportunity to volunteer with campers and present them with a check from the Northwestern Mutual Foundation. The funds went towards sponsoring kids with cancer to attend a fun filled week of summer camp. CAMP participated in the foundation's Childhood Cancer Program in partnership with the Rose Bowl to bring the joys of camp to kids with cancer. We were also able to give the gift of beads to incorporate into projects from our friends at Beads of Courage.

Our first 2018 project was to volunteer at Ronald McDonald House. We had a great time backing cookies, brownies, and treats for families who have children in treatment at the hospital.

We are proud and excited to announce we surpassed our 2017 fundraising goals with YOUR support!  With the help of sponsors, friends, family, everyone in our office, we raised almost $20,000 to fight childhood cancer.  This year, in addition to our annual Dream Run 5K, we added new events to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer, including Lemonade Days and Cocktails for a Cure. As always, it rained during out 5K, and as always, we didn't let that stop us!

Our entire office participated in Alex's Lemonade Days, a national fundraiser benefitting Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. Everyone donated time, money, and lemon-themed treats to help raise money to find a cure for childhood cancer. We held lemonade stands outside our office at the Eilan so our neighbors could join us. With the generous matching funds provided by our Managing Director and the Northwestern Mutual Foundation, we were able to raise over $7,000 in just 5 days!

In the spring, we held a book drive for the Boerne Library Foundation's community outreach program. The foundation partners with local non-profits like Hill Country Family Services, Head Start, Kendall County Women's Shelter, and Meadowland's at Roy Maas Youth Alternatives, to bring literacy to people who cannot access the library. We delivered over 500 English and Spanish books for children and adults.

In March we joined forces with #HashtagLunchbag to provide 250 meals, love, and inspirational messages to homeless in our community. In their own words, it was an opportunity to feed the souls of others. We contributed our time to something fun while making a meaningful impact.

We all came together to show our love for veterans by contributing to Soldier Angels Valentine's for Veterans project.  We raised over $600 in donations! To add the fun, some of us brought our kiddos to the office to join us for arts, crafts, and cupcakes. Together we made over 100 cards!

In the fall we hosted our second annual Dream Run 5K, to raise much needed funds for childhood cancer. Proceeds benefited Alex's Lemonade Stand as part of Northwestern Mutual's national Childhood Cancer Program.  It was a cold, rainy, thundering morning at the Eilan, but that didn't stop our friends and family from showing their support.  Almost 200 people braved the storm and literally danced in the rain with a Zumba and Salsa warmup.  By the end of the 5K, the clouds cleared and we raised aproximately $8,000. More importantly, we brought the community together and made some new friends who will help make next year's event even more impactful.

At our annual meeting in Milwaukee, we were part of the efforts that raised over half a million dollars for Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. Some walked, some ran. Some of us went a mile, while others did a 5K and some even did the 10K. We really enjoy coming together for a purpose bigger than ourselves, this time for our national childhood cancer program

To kick off the summer, we joined forces with our Austin office to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. Everyone joined in to help out-from leaders to interns and grandpas to infants. It was a great way to come together as a team to help out the community.

In April we supported Relay for Life in honor of Yvonne Cabrera, an associate and a bright light in our office. Yvonne is a breast cancer survivor who has lost many family members to cancer. She set a goal of raising $100, but we rallied together to surpriser her and raised over $1,000 in just 3 days! We wore pink to in honor of Breast Cancer Survivors and purple ribbons, the color of Relay for Life.

In March we organized a drive to collect household and personal items for residents at Haven for Hope, a place of hope and new beginnings for the homeless in Bexar County. We had the opportunity to drop off our donations and volunteer at their donation center.

We kicked off 2016 with a family-friendly IMPACT project at San Antonio Pets Alive, a true no-kill shelter for abandoned, abused, or neglected cats and dogs. Our team had a great time interacting with the animals at the Paul Jolly Adoption Center. We helped make them more adoptable by socializing puppies, providing much needed attention to cats, and walking dogs. San Antonio Pets Alive

Our December IMPACT project benefited Blessings in a Backpack in Boerne. We collected food and joined them in putting together the bags of food to be delivered to elementary school children who are living in poverty. They are run by volunteers and they work really hard. We know some of these children personally so it really was a privilege to help out.

Our November project was all about gratitude. We all have so much to be grateful for so we challenged ourselves to raise 2,015 lbs. for San Antonio Food Bank, with each $1=10lbs. Our total lbs. in food was 259 and our total dollars were $191.  The grand total was the equivalent of 2,169 lbs.! Thank you to everyone who participated!

In summer 2015 Northwestern Mutual - San Antonio was the presenting sponsor of the 2015 Boerne Public Library  Summer Reading Program. We also collaborated with BISD Summer School and the library to provide weekly field trips. At the end of the program, students received free books to take home.

Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children under 19 years of age. Children receiving treatment for cancer spend many days, months, and even years in the hospital. Northwestern Mutual launched its national Childhood Cancer Program in 2012 to accelerate the search for cures for childhood cancers and to provide support to families battling the disease. We are proud to support these efforts locally.

To celebrate the San Antonio office’s 20th anniversary, we invited our colleagues, families, friends, clients, and community members to do something special with us. We hosted the Dream Run 5K fundraiser right outside our office at Éilan, benefiting Starlight Children's Foundation.  300 people came together to raise over $8,000!

As a result of everyone's efforts, children at University Hospital are now able to enjoy a Starlight® Fun Center® Mobile Entertainment Unit and 17 laptops. Fun Centers are mobile entertainment units that easily roll up to a hospital bed so children can play video games and watch movies. Whether nervously awaiting surgery, enduring treatment or sitting in their hospital room, Fun Centers help children cope by providing endless hours of fun and distraction.

In 2014, Northwestern Mutual Foundation donated $25,000 to Methodist Children's Hospital in San Antonio, as part of our national Childhood Cancer Initiative. The donation contributed to the purchase of four Starlight® Fun Center® Mobile Entertainment Units along with an extensive list of items from their wish list. The best part was witnessing the children smiling and playing!

One of our first initiatives against cancer was in 2010 when our Managing Director, Fernando Suarez, was nominated to run for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Man of the Year.  We all rallied together to make a difference in the lives of blood cancer patients, with each dollar raised representing one vote against cancer.  Fernando's winning campaign raised over $80,000 in just 10 weeks. Fernando ran in honor of his daughter's friend Ella and many other children who have been touched by cancer.  He believes, "You do not need to wait for something to happen to you to get involved with a cause. When you care, you step out of your comfort zone, move from the sidelines and take action."
